This talk will focus on the occasion of Verdi conducting his Aida. Verdi had always conducted his works and had done this in various ways, but his conducting Aida marked a radical change. The change in the conception of music afforded a change in its performance: one necessitated the other.
The circulation of Meyerbeer’s operas in Italy had made clear that Italian theatres were not prepared for this repertoire, a fact which was confirmed by the arrival of an opera such as Don Carlos. As a result, Verdi felt personally obliged to reform the system of production in Italy’s opera houses.
